Academy midfielder Aiden McCallion was thrilled to win the Glasgow Cup at Firhill last night.

His penalty in the shoot-out proved to be decisive as Steven Smith’s Rangers side beat Celtic on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw at Firhill and it capped a positive spell for the Light Blues youngster.

He has been training with Barry Ferguson’s first-team squad recently and was on the bench for the games against St Mirren, Aberdeen and both Europa League quarter-final ties against Athletic Club Bilbao and also collected the Academy Player of the Year award.

Reflecting on the cup triumph and the step up to the main squad he told RangersTV: “It is obviously a great achievement to win this.

“We conceded a goal just before half-time and Stevie just told us to stick together and go out in the next 45 minutes and go for it.

“It’s a cup final and he told us to go and win the game.

“It’s obviously what you want to do when you play with Rangers and what you should be doing.

“We are obviously delighted to go and win the cup.

“Rydnn helped us out with saves and the boys who took penalties all took them well so it was good to win the game.

“I was nervous with my penalty, but I was confident as well. You just have to step up and score and I did that.

“It was great to see Neraysho Kasanwirjo back playing. He has a good bit of experience and he spoke to us throughout the game.

“It was good to have him behind us and there was a good mix of playing groups in the team.

“It has been good experiences for me recently.

“I have been working with the first-team in the last few weeks and I’ve been in a few squads so it has been a good experience to be in about the boys and work with Barry as well.”
