Everyone at RYDC wishes Steven Smith well after the former Academy coach was confirmed as part of Danny Röhl’s backroom team for the rest of the season.

Smith, a huge supporter of our work, began the campaign as Under-19s coach but he has been assisting with the first-team since the German was appointed Head Coach in October.

He progressed from the Academy to the first-team as a player – making more than a century of appearances for the club – and he has now progressed as an Academy coach to first-team coach.

It’s a fantastic story and we are all delighted for him.

Danny Röhl’s team also includes Sascha Lense (men’s first-team performance manager), Matthias Kaltenbach(assistant coach), Sal Bibbo (goalkeeping coach), Scott Fry (set-piece coach), Rhys Owen (performance coach) and Tristan Steiner (sports analyst).

Röhl said: “I am delighted to confirm Steven as part of my coaching team.

“He has impressed me with his ability on and off the training pitch, the way he works with the players and staff, as well as his experience.

“I said it was important to have someone who knows the club and Steven has that.

“He has played here and brings that knowledge of this unique club to our coaching team.”

Youth development at Rangers is assisted by annual RYDC donations to the Academy and more than £12.5 million has already been provided.
